Is an SEO Company Worth it for a Small Home Business?
SEO stands for ‘Search Engine Optimization’ meaning simply ‘the process of getting your website higher up on Google’. In theory, this can be highly useful for any business as it will allow more potential customers to find you and thus to order your services.
Lots of companies offer SEO services and in all likelihood you will have been contacted by several of them in the past. If everything goes well, then using one of these companies will increase your turnover and profits and thus offer a great ROI.
But is that how it really works? And more importantly, is it really worth it for your small home business?
To SEO or Not to SEO?
If you run a very small business and you work for a number of steady clients, then there’s a chance that you won’t need SEO services. If you are happy with your clientele and you don’t have the time to take on many more, then really there’s no benefit to getting more people to your site unless you want to have the option to switch to a higher paying customer.
On the other hand though, if your business is ‘scalable’, if your service is something that clients only use occasionally or you’re in the market for new customers and clients, then it could potentially be worthwhile.
Before you go ahead though, there are a few more things to consider. The first is who you’ll be going up against. If your company is selling web design, then your SEO efforts are going to have to be greater than all the other web design companies out there. This is a huge challenge and it means you may be better off choosing another form of marketing (direct marketing, fliers or social media).
If you do think you have a shot at ranking somewhere for popular search terms relating to your industry, then you might want to go ahead with SEO. In this case though you should still consider the advantages and disadvantages versus other forms of marketing. It may be that ‘PPC’ (Pay Per Click – or sponsored listings) offers you quicker results. Likewise, it might be better to just pay for a banner.
SEO certainly is good value for money as long as you work with a good company but it is also slow going and not guaranteed. Weigh up the pros and cons for your particular situation before you dive in with both feet!
