An Introduction to SEO for the Small Home Business
If you run a small business from home then your ability to make money will entirely be dependent on your ability to find customers and clients to sell to while maintaining a big profit margin. Pretty much like any business then, except you won’t have the huge amount of cash to funnel into a marketing campaign and you’ll be more reliant on your individual customers and clients because you won’t have as many of them.
With all that in mind then, it’s important to think about ways to market your business that won’t cost you a huge amount of money but will give you the maximum exposure and bring in lots of new business.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for ‘Search Engine Optimization’ which essentially means you’re designing your website and your marketing efforts in such a way as to appear at the top of the search engines (or more specifically Google). These days when someone is looking to buy something, to eat somewhere, to get their hair cut or to use a business for any other reason, they will generally go online first and then search for companies in their area. If your site comes up as the first result then you will bring in much more traffic resulting in a lot more potential sales.
But how does a small business operating out of a spare bedroom go about getting to the top of Google?
In general, the way to optimize a site for Google’s indexing is to a) fill it with lots of relevant and high quality content and b) generate lots of high quality links from relevant sites. It’s also important to think about the specific keywords (i.e. the search terms) you want to target and then to weave those phrases very subtly into your content. Be careful though – overdo it and you will get penalized!
The good news is that because you’re a home business – and thus probably a local business – you will be able to target local search terms and thus reduce the amount of competition you face.
It’s worth noting that Google is constantly changing its algorithms and there’s a lot more to SEO than we’ve covered here. For these reasons it might be worth using a third party company to provide your SEO companies but make sure you shop around to find a service you can trust!
